I've been working with Clover Paint and I've noticed the brushes have a big lag problem when you make a paper size 2,000 pixels and up. It's not too bad if the brush size is medium, but when it is large the lag is really bad. Not sure if this can be fixed, it may just be because tablets are limited. I'm pretty sure SketchBook Pro doesn't lag this bad, but Infinite Painter crashes if you get over 2, 000 pixels and ArtFlow also lags on blending, so Clover Paint is not the only program to have trouble with big files.

It depends on the brush type as well. Gavin Ball (guy I linked some youtube videos on and who joined here recently) set up a brush specificially to counter this for when you are doing large drawing with lots of layers. That brush was mainly for doing block colour though. Do you have the hand shake correction on. That causes lag as well due to the additional processing required. It's mainly a hardware issue. Mobile processor and not much RAM for a programme thats trying to replicate a desktop drawing suite. I open the app using IOBIT MobileCare Gaming booster. This shuts down all other apps in the background and stops them from re opening ensuring the drawing app has as much resource as possible. www.iobit.com/advanced-mobile-care.php

I watched some of Gavin's videos, but I guess I forgot what he said. Block color was what I was trying to do, but I wanted a brush stroke look so I had a custom designed flat brush. I guess the settings were too much for the program. I don't have the hand shake correction on so that's not causing it. I think you are right, it is a hardware issue. I have Clean Master which shuts down running background apps, too. If I use the brushes on medium size that works better.

I was able to make an excellent spatter brush out of the airbrush settings and it works beautifully for making stars or snow. (Now if I can just remember how I did it, haha!) I'll just have to play around some more with the program. The best way to do that is to do a big project in Clover Paint. I'm doing a night scene so we'll see how it turns out.

I posted the question over in the XDA forum as to whether changing and of the options in the dev section in settings would do anything to improve the performance issues we see when using larger canvas sizes and complex brushes. I'll post the feed back in the OS tweeks section of this forum. I already turn off the animation options in there as i prefer function over form. I dont use any type of live background and limit the amount of widgets I have active. I'm currently experimenting with limiting the background apps and forcing GPU rendering. I've noticed that with the ROM im looking to flash I can increase the GPU processor speed to 700mhz rather than 533mhz which is what mine is currently set to. I worry about the temperature of my device under load already though so not sure if I will make use of that.

I put in a white background on a bottom layer because I don't like the checkerboard look, so that may have slowed it down. I did tweek the flat brush again so that the paint flow increased and looked less like a paintbrush and that helped with the lag a little. I do have quite a few windows open like the color picker, the navigator, and the brush size, but that's why I bought the upgrade. If you have to shut down all the windows, there is no point in buying the upgrade. I also shut off the animation ripple effect because I figured it slowed things down. I have given up trying to use the large setting on the brushes and have just made do with the medium size. I have also collapsed the layers into just two, but you have to do that with a lot of PC programs anyway.

I've tried various things and have only managed slight improvements with this issue. I'm going to take extreme measures this weekend I think and install a new Kernal and ROM and overclock the GPU to 640mhz (120% vs stock speed of 533mhz) to see if it makes an improvement to the rendering. I can do this with out increasing the voltage and still keep it stable so I should see little to no hit to the battery life.
